Is China Safe to Travel? A First-Time Visitor’s Guide

Updated: 2 days ago

So, you're thinking about exploring China—land of dumplings, dragons, dynasties, and dazzling cityscapes. But maybe you’re hesitating, wondering, “Is it actually safe to travel there?”

The short answer? Yes—China is very safe to travel! Let’s now dive into the numbers, the vibes, and the real-deal travel truths from the perspective of a first-time visitor. By the end, you’ll be itching to pack your bags, and hopefully, book a private tour with us at China Vistas (wink wink).

China’s Crime Rate: The Numbers Don’t Lie

Homicide rate 2023

Let’s talk stats. According to the Ministry of Public Security, China’s overall crime rate is low and has been steadily declining. The homicide rate? Around 0.46 per 100,000 people. That’s lower than most Western countries, including the United States, which averages about 6.3 per 100,000, and even the highly-developed welfare state, Denmark, which recorded a 0.80 homicide rate in 2021.

Pick-pocketing, petty theft, and scams can happen—just like anywhere in the world—but violent crime is rare, especially against foreigners. In fact, many expats and travelers say they feel safer walking around Beijing at midnight than in parts of their hometowns during the day.

Big Cities, Big Safety

It's worth noting that public safety measures in China are stringent. The country has strict gun control laws, contributing to the low incidence of gun-related crimes. Major tourist destinations like Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, and Chengdu are not only vibrant cultural hubs but also very well-maintained.

It's common to see people walking alone at night, using public transportation without concern, and enjoying bustling markets without the constant need to clutch their belongings. Fun fact: You’re much more likely to get stopped by locals wanting a photo with you than by someone with bad intentions. Foreigners are still a novelty in some areas—so smile and strike a pose!

The Real MVP: China’s Transport System

Public transportation in China is fast, efficient, and—wait for it—incredibly safe.  Chinese metros are modern, air-conditioned, clearly signposted in both Chinese and English (bless), and come with safety features galore. Think platform screen doors to prevent accidents, security staff at every entrance, and CCTV everywhere. Lost your wallet? There’s a decent chance it’ll be turned in to station staff. We’re not even kidding.

Then there’s the high-speed rail network that might make you question everything you’ve ever accepted about public transit back home. You can zip from Beijing to Xi’an (over 1,000 kilometers) in under 5 hours while sipping green tea and watching the countryside fly by at 300 km/h, with minimum security concerns.

At stations and airports, expect bag scanners and security checks that make you feel like a VIP (or like you’re going on a very glamorous school trip). In short: you’re in good hands.

Healthcare & Emergency Support

China's major cities have modern hospitals and international clinics. Emergency services are reliable—dial 110 for police, 120 for medical emergencies, and 119 for fire. Staff might not always speak English fluently, but don’t worry—someone always finds a way to help.

Travel insurance is a must (not because it’s dangerous, but because stuff happens). For mild cases, don't worry: Chinese pharmacies are everywhere.

The Culture of Hospitality

The Chinese take hospitality seriously. Whether you’re in a bustling city or a sleepy countryside village, people are generally warm, welcoming, and curious.

In Chinese culture, hosting a guest is considered an honor. There's even an old saying by Confucius: it is always a pleasure to greet a friend from afar (有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎). You might be surprised at just how often locals go out of their way to help—whether it’s guiding you to the right bus stop with a smile and some enthusiastic hand gestures, offering you a seat on a crowded train, or even walking you halfway across town just to make sure you don’t get lost (true story; it happens a lot).

What’s equally important is that this welcoming spirit contributes to a broader sense of emotional safety—something statistics can’t always measure.

Is China Safe to Travel? 1000 Times Yes!

The Verdict: China is safe, sound, and seriously worth it. It's a country where ancient wonders meet futuristic skylines, and where you can roam confidently, camera in hand and curiosity in tow.
